A Brief History of BJU Press

In the early 1970s it became apparent that if there were to be academically solid, biblically sound science textbooks, Christian teachers of science would have to write them. George Mulfinger and Emmett Williams agreed and were commissioned to write a high school physical science textbook.

At nearly the same time, God impressed on Dr. Bob Jones III that Christian schools needed Christian textbooks if they were to maintain their vision. By the time Mulfinger and Williams had completed the manuscript for Physical Science for Christian Schools, Bob Jones University was preparing to embark on textbook publication.

Over the next decade, more materials appeared, such as the Bible series for the elementary grades, Bible Action Truths, the reading and handwriting series, and philosophy pamphlets on Christian education as well as the first media attempt, a filmstrip series on science.

The writers at BJU Press developed textbook after textbook, tailoring each one to the needs of Christian educators. By the mid-nineties the complete product line was available, consisting of core textbooks and a wide range of ancillary materials for K4-grade 12.

In 1982 BJU Press became the first Christian textbook company to offer textbooks to homeschools. Other services soon followed as the numbers and needs of home educators grew. In 1985 BJU Press began a testing service (BJU Press Testing & Evaluation) for small Christian schools and homeschools. In 1992 the Academy of Home Education made its debut, offering record-keeping and transcript services to home educators.

In 1995, BJU Press began offering distance learning classes to homeschool families. Although the first classes were offered only by satellite, they are now available online or via DVD or Hard Drive.

Though times and technology have changed, the mission of BJU Press remains the same. We know that the children of each generation can shape the world of the future; and the shape they give it will depend on the ideas and principles that they live by. Our desire is to partner with you as you teach your children both the core knowledge they need and the truth that will help them apply it. As your partners in Christian education, we strive to provide you with the best textbooks and teaching tools for your homeschool.
