Chipmunk goes in search of a king who is brave and wise and true in A King For Brass Cobweb, an early chapter book written by Dawn L. Watkins. Detailed color illustrations and pencil sketches by Holly Hannon will delight readers young and old.
The Kingdom of Brass Cobweb has many treasures, including a peppermint lake and a shining web of brass for a gate. But what is a kingdom without a king? When the citizens of Brass Cobweb decide to find a king, Grandmother Cricket says that Chipmunk should be the one to go. Chipmunk leaves on his journey with a bundle of food and Grandmother’s advice. He sets out for the Copper Hills, encountering many dangers. Among all his new acquaintances, however, he cannot find one who is brave and wise and true. He returns home, thinking he has failed, only to discover that he has succeeded brilliantly.

Ready for a chapter book? This is for you! What wonderful lessons we can learn from Chipmunk, who is always brave, wise, and true! How great to realize that no one of these virtues of bravery, wisdom, or truthfulness can exist unless all three are operative. Great lesson! My own children loved this story, first as a read-aloud then when they could read for themselves. Now my grandchildren can join the Brass Cobweb enthusiasts with the new copies I have purchased for them. I'm glad the book is still available!
