The Far Journey by Lucille Travis is a story for kids about Horace, a mouse with artistic talent far beyond anything ever seen in Fleur Gardens. His mother, who escaped when her village was burned by the rats, left him in Fleur Gardens with kind mice who live quiet lives and keep the rules. But Horace's talent for drawing drives him to break an important rule and puts his adopted home in danger. Horace must then decide whether to set aside his own dream to defend his friends. His choice has much bigger results than anyone could have imagined.

A hit with both my second grader and sixth grader!I purchased The Far Journey for my second grader, thinking that we would enjoy reading it together. I am glad that I planned on reading it aloud to her because it does fit in the 9-12 yr. old category, as they say. I just couldn't resist it, knowing how much she loves books about animals that are the main characters. She could not have read this herself without struggling a bit with the comprehension, but it was perfect as a read-aloud. I read, while we snuggled. It wasn't long until my sixth grader joined us, and she was also hooked immediately. Great job, Lucille Travis. We look forward to reading another one. It was left with a satisfying ending, but it definitely left room for plenty more adventure to come! The only thing I would change is to have more biblical applications.
