About the Courses

K5 Distance Learning teaches kindergarteners to apply their natural curiosity and start to develop a broad base of interests and gives them the basic tools they need to explore the world around them. In K5 Beginnings, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Lawson teach listening, oral composition, phonics, and reading comprehension while integrating art, science, and heritage studies concepts. K5 Math with Mrs. Franklin focuses on teaching number sense and uses manipulatives to explain basic math functions such as numbers, measurement, time, and money.

Beginnings K5

The Beginnings program provides thorough instruction for teaching phonics and reading skills. It follows an integrated approach that includes skills for listening and responding with oral and written composition. Complete Science and Heritage Studies units are woven into the themes. The Reading Books for K5 give practice in reading skills and build comprehension and habits that further reading fluency. Songs, charts, and activities aid in teaching phonics and word meanings.

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, BS

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Lawson previously taught kindergarten for four years. "One of my goals in teaching is to help your child feel successful at his present level and to encourage him to improve. Throughout the lessons, we talk about simple yet extremely important concepts, such as ‘God made me special,’ and ‘God gave me the Bible.’ I enjoy talking about these things with the children through the lessons. I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, and I’m thankful to the Lord for letting me teach your child through this Distance Learning program."

Mrs. Evanna Walker, BS

Mrs. Evanna Walker, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Walker has eight years’ experience teaching first grade at Bob Jones Elementary School. “My first love is to teach a child to read-primarily so that he can read God’s Word for himself and share it with others. He should be able to appreciate what he reads, draw conclusions, and make value judgments to become a thinker.”

Mrs. Janelle Franklin, BS, MS

Mrs. Janelle Franklin, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Franklin has worked with children from primary through high school. She loves teaching and is excited that the Lord has given her the opportunity to serve in this ministry. "My goal is to instill in each child a love for learning and to teach truths about God at the same time."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Homeschool Material - Hands On - Great for all learning types The BJU press DVD package with books is an excellent homeschooling option. The teachers keep the courses interesting, and it is really a much better option than doing the teaching yourself especially if you have an independent child. Even for a very social child, this DVD program offers enough interaction to keep attention. The Bible time is 15 minutes long, but you could add more if you desired. Math is 30 minutes and a large quantity of information is given during this time. Some children could take a break in the middle. This is a very hands-on math course which is great for the tactile-kinesthetic child. Beginnings is around 45 minutes long except on days when they do reading. It is a little shorter on those days. The children are exposed to so much good information during that time, and by a month, your child will be reading sentences. The backdrops are great, characters are fun, and everything lends itself to a better learning experience. The program would be great for any child. The teaching is multi-faceted, and there is a great deal of hands-on work in all areas. As a parent, I highly encourage this program. No parent could put together on their own what this dvd and materials does for them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Good And The Bad I am about three weeks into this curriculum and I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of preparation that has to be done for Kindergarten. Every week I have to go shopping so that we have everything we need. It requires an INCREDIBLE amount of extras.....I am always chasing down paper plates, cotton balls, cardstock, graham crackers, frosting....and the list goes on. In addition...I am constantly cutting, coloring, assembling something. Other than the full time job that this has created for me...I would say that this curriculum is incredible! I absolutely love the program. I just went with the distance learning program because I work full time in addition to doing homeschool with two children. I had done the third grade program last year and I was able to manage just fine. I would rather pay a little more and have a complete kit with EVERYTHING in it....but I understand with the amount of things that this program calls would be next to impossible. It REALLY REALLY requires a ton of extra preparation and supplies. I would probably do it again because I love my children and they are worth it. But....this is truly a labor of love.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Was hoping this was a good program I would like for BJU to know this is the most confusing and difficult program. I am just starting out with homeschooling my little one and wished I would have chosen a different program. The mom's minutes, the printed mom's minutes are listed wrong. The teacher in the bible section, you can hardly hear her, so we can't use that section. The math teacher does not know her colors and she is teaching my child them and she can't get them right. Hopefully someone will sit down and wright out all the wrongs with this program and let you know, so you can fix all the problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well done My kids have all used BJU K-5 and have learned so much. I love how the beginnings program incorporates so many subjects into it. I also love that they introduce sounds in an order that the kids can start reading simple words right away and not get bored with it all. My only draw back is that there is a lot of different manipulatives every day to gather and put together. Which is fun for the kids but a lot for me sometimes since I have to prepare material for 7 kids all different grades and have 3 little ones too. Overall though it is wonderful. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent We love this curriculum. The teachers are engaging and the content is great. I couldn't find any information regarding how much work is involved for the parent so I'll share my thoughts for anyone else who is wondering the same thing. There is quite a bit of prep work, honestly. But it can mostly all be completed before you start, at the beginning of the year. There are things to color and laminate and cut out, the math manipulatives must be punched out and bagged, etc. However, you cannot beat BJU Press for their organization. They have made everything as simple as possible, you just have to do some prep work in the beginning. They supply you with a list of everything you will need for the entire year so you can gather up anything you don't have on hand. I found that very helpful. Also, the Moms Minutes for each lesson are presented by the teacher to let you know what your child will be learning that day (example: the day they discuss smoke detectors, the teacher lets you know to expect your child to ask about them) and what supplies you need to have available. This information is also provided in written format, but I like to watch the short Moms Minutes because the teachers show you finished crafts and projects so you can see what they should look like. So, there is quite a bit of prep work for mom at the beginning, but then through the year it is very manageable and easy to keep up with. And best of all, it's fun and your child will learn so much!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent content My daughter loved this program. The teachers and other guests are very engaging and the content is wonderful. My main recommendation would be to upgrade filming the next batch of videos in high definition since technology is evolving quickly. The hard paper worksheets and schedules are also being upgraded, which will help the ease of pulling it all together each day.
