K5 for Distance Learning

About the Courses

K5 Distance Learning teaches kindergarteners to apply their natural curiosity and start to develop a broad base of interests and gives them the basic tools they need to explore the world around them. In K5 Beginnings, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Lawson teach listening, oral composition, phonics, and reading comprehension while integrating art, science, and heritage studies concepts. K5 Math with Mrs. Franklin focuses on teaching number sense and uses manipulatives to explain basic math functions such as numbers, measurement, time, and money.

Beginnings K5

The Beginnings program provides thorough instruction for teaching phonics and reading skills. It follows an integrated approach that includes skills for listening and responding with oral and written composition. Complete Science and Heritage Studies units are woven into the themes. The Reading Books for K5 give practice in reading skills and build comprehension and habits that further reading fluency. Songs, charts, and activities aid in teaching phonics and word meanings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from K5 Beginnings what a life saver. I am so happy that we found BJU Press' distance learning years ago to use with our older boys. After having started K5 with my youngest recently I only wish we would have had this when the older boys were in Kindergarten. I learned with my older boys I was not a very patient teacher and the dl teachers never lose patience. It still requires my participation to a certain extent but more of as a helper than the main teacher. I know there is a bit of a learning curve when switching to a new curriculum but for our family BJU Press has been worth it and well worth the financial investment in our boys futures.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Outdated/Disorganized The dvds were shockingly outdated, with the information in the moms minutes video beginning, not matching the info or materials called for in the printed teacher guide. Frightfully disorganized with incomplete teacher information, for instance the checkup stations require parent guidance to administer, but parent instructions are not included and half of it is not self explanatory, and difficult to figure out how to administer. When you finally find the pdf checkup station instructions, it will be in an obscure place on their website, and will still not give clear guidance for the 1st page. Some of the dvds arrived scratched and I was very upset to realize that I paid through the nose to RENT used material that must be returned for some other poor soul. Very frustrating to have to try to call customer service to get scratched dvds replaced, throwing off our school week and putting us behind. Personal pet peeve as well, but the teacher fails to pronounce words with "ing" correctly, resulting in my child mimicking the teacher and now pronouncing words ending with "ing" as "een". I am "start-een" to resent that. I would never recommend this to anyone, especially not new homeschoolers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it - No question Very pleased with BJU K5 overall. My child could have benefitted from the 1st grade Math and Bible as she was already very familiar with the Math facts/concepts and Bible stories being presented in K5. However, the review for her is fine for kindergarten. The Reading and Phonics program is TOP NOTCH and I absolutely love it! Very pleased! My K5 daughter is reading quite well and improving daily. We're already looking forward to 1st grade with BJU. One area for improvement is sound quality. We use DVD's and some lessons require the volume to be turned WAY up and others need to be turned way down. Currently, there is a little paper shuffling to gather all the supplies needed for each lesson. Its NOT a deal breaker for me, but be aware that it takes a little getting used to where everything is. Maybe in the future BJU would be able to package lesson materials in a more consecutive order and all in one place to make it more cohesive for the parent to organize each lesson.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Homeschool Material - Hands On - Great for all learning types The BJU press DVD package with books is an excellent homeschooling option. The teachers keep the courses interesting, and it is really a much better option than doing the teaching yourself especially if you have an independent child. Even for a very social child, this DVD program offers enough interaction to keep attention. The Bible time is 15 minutes long, but you could add more if you desired. Math is 30 minutes and a large quantity of information is given during this time. Some children could take a break in the middle. This is a very hands-on math course which is great for the tactile-kinesthetic child. Beginnings is around 45 minutes long except on days when they do reading. It is a little shorter on those days. The children are exposed to so much good information during that time, and by a month, your child will be reading sentences. The backdrops are great, characters are fun, and everything lends itself to a better learning experience. The program would be great for any child. The teaching is multi-faceted, and there is a great deal of hands-on work in all areas. As a parent, I highly encourage this program. No parent could put together on their own what this dvd and materials does for them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Good And The Bad I am about three weeks into this curriculum and I am absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of preparation that has to be done for Kindergarten. Every week I have to go shopping so that we have everything we need. It requires an INCREDIBLE amount of extras.....I am always chasing down paper plates, cotton balls, cardstock, graham crackers, frosting....and the list goes on. In addition...I am constantly cutting, coloring, assembling something. Other than the full time job that this has created for me...I would say that this curriculum is incredible! I absolutely love the program. I just went with the distance learning program because I work full time in addition to doing homeschool with two children. I had done the third grade program last year and I was able to manage just fine. I would rather pay a little more and have a complete kit with EVERYTHING in it....but I understand with the amount of things that this program calls would be next to impossible. It REALLY REALLY requires a ton of extra preparation and supplies. I would probably do it again because I love my children and they are worth it. But....this is truly a labor of love.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Was hoping this was a good program I would like for BJU to know this is the most confusing and difficult program. I am just starting out with homeschooling my little one and wished I would have chosen a different program. The mom's minutes, the printed mom's minutes are listed wrong. The teacher in the bible section, you can hardly hear her, so we can't use that section. The math teacher does not know her colors and she is teaching my child them and she can't get them right. Hopefully someone will sit down and wright out all the wrongs with this program and let you know, so you can fix all the problems.
