Mrs. Kristin Dunn, BS, MEd

Mrs. Kristin Dunn, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Dunn loves children and enjoys teaching them to explore new concepts. "My goal is to encourage spiritual growth as students prepare for the future. Learning is a lifelong process, and I hope to communicate the importance of learning to your student."

Mrs. Sherri Vick, BS

Mrs. Sherri Vick, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningSherri Vick previously taught various elementary and junior high grades. "I like to look at the picture as a whole—to relate one subject to another so that the child can see how God’s plan fits together. I want the child to want to learn, so the lessons have to be fun. Hands-on is the best way, so I don’t want the student to just watch, but participate too! One of my goals is that, after watching the lessons, your child will continue in the things he has learned and develop lifelong learning skills that he can use both now and in the future."

Mrs. Debra Overly, BS, MS

Mrs. Debra Overly, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Overly, a mother of three, has experience teaching several elementary grades. "I want to encourage each child to look forward to learning each day and also to provide sufficient practice and review activities to help alleviate mom’s workload. Most importantly, I want to present Christ in each subject that I teach. Each child should hear the gospel and then see in a very practical way how it can change a sinner."

Miss Tara Liston, BA, MAT

Mrs. Tara Liston, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMiss Liston has experience working with children from primary to high school. “Teaching is a joy. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to impact children’s lives with the hope of encouraging a growing relationship with the Lord. I love teaching, and I hope my enthusiasm will give your child a love for learning.”

Mrs. Evanna Walker, BS

Mrs. Evanna Walker, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Walker has eight years’ experience teaching first grade at Bob Jones Elementary School. “My first love is to teach a child to read-primarily so that he can read God’s Word for himself and share it with others. He should be able to appreciate what he reads, draw conclusions, and make value judgments to become a thinker.”

Mrs. Tawnja Schaffner, BS, MEd

Mrs. Tawnja Schaffner, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Schaffner has previously taught all the elementary grades. "I grew up on the mission field of the Netherlands. I have wanted to be a teacher from the time I was nine years old. I am grateful to the Lord for allowing the desires of my heart to become a reality. BJU Press Distance Learning is giving me a chance to teach children like yours in parts of the world I may never visit."

Rated 5 out of 5 by Expensive but good We are really enjoying the heritage series! My only complaint is that the price is high, and we aren't allowed to keep the dvds at the end of the course. Also, I wish it were a little less churchy. We want to learn history, we don't necessarily want the added religious things. October 19, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Academic Excellence& Love of Learning After trying to teach all of my children (4 of them) all of the subjects, I was looking for something different. I love the Charlotte Mason approach to learning so I was hesitant to use video lessons. I was so thrilled to find BJU HomeSat because it incorporates structure and repetition (just the right amount) with gentle and fun learning, while upholding excellent academic standards. I have used a lot of different curriculum with my children (all very well known and respected)- such as, Abeka, Apologia, Saxon, etc.. BJU Press is on par academically- and because of the love of learning taught through the video lessons, I feel like the education is superior to all of the above. If you can teach a child to love learning, he will be a better student- and a life-long learner. Unlike other video programs, your child will not sit staring at a teacher or a classroom all day. The teacher speaks directly to your child and the lessons are full of puppets, video clips, computerized images, and lots of hands on learning. My oldest is using 2 subjects from BJU Video 4th Grade this year, and some from 5th Grade. Mrs. Vick has really taught my daughter to think in the 4th grade math lessons. My daughter HATED math with a passion before we started using the videos. She would do her work obediently, but she would often be frustrated to tears. Now, while she doesn't LOVE it, she has fun during her lessons and is confident with the skills she has learned. No more tears at math time- what a blessing! Mrs. Overly has also helped her polish her writing skills and grammar skills in English 4. I really like that the emphasis is on learning grammar with a purpose- not just to memorize a bunch of facts. There will be a unit on grammar, then a unit on writing, etc.. Grammar is used as a tool to improve writing skills and even speech. BJU English is excellent! My daughter has written short stories that are full of descriptive words and fun characters. The lessons are so informative and helpful that I rarely have to help her with her work. The same is true of her math lessons. She has only asked for help a handful of times in the school year- and she is doing twice as many problems every day as she was with her previous math (all without tears and frustration, mind you!). I like the fact that there is daily review of math facts included in the lessons. I have noticed a few reviewers that complain about the time involved in doing the video program. No complaints here! My children love their school time (we start at 8am and are done by 1pm every day- this includes a half hour break). Having different teachers and different themes for each subject adds enough variation to the day that my children (5, 7, 8 and 10) do not need more than half an hour mid morning. Granted, school will take longer as they get older, but if we want our children to be ready for college, we need to teach them diligence and self control!! :) This is a great program!! March 23, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Materials/Wonderful Biblical Integration This is a great curriculum choice if you are looking for something that the student can do on their own. I have found that my son does get a bit bored at times and has quite a long day of video plus worktext pages. We really enjoy all of the classes. The Handwriting is a bit of busy work since he can write in cursive already. The Math is excellent but the worktext pages are too much for most days. It's great if your student needs a lot of review! The teachers are great, but a few of the videos need updated and some of the teachers are not as interactive as others. I wish the complete package was a bit cheaper or at least up-to-date videos with the price. You might need to change a few things to make for a shorter school day. I don't think you will be disappointed! February 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love the bible program! By the end of the year my son will be a more advanced reader because of the richness the cirriculum has provided. November 20, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Loved the product but wasn't happy with some of the changes I have used BJU with my eldest daughter for the last 3 years of her homeschooling. We loved it. It was easy to use and she was very independent with it. I now use it for 4 more of my children. The grade 4 they enjoy very much and are learning to be independent. My only complaint is this year I have loose leaf copies of the teachers editions instead of hard copies. It was so much easier to have the actual book which is identical the the students book. There is no searching for pages and overload of paper work to search through. I hope next year they provide the books like in the past. November 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Life Saver and Faith Grower! I absolutely love BJU 4th grade DVD/Distance Learning! We really struggled with whether or not we could afford the program initially... but after having prayed and made the decision, and now experienced it for the past two months, I don't know how we could have afforded NOT to. The Bible is woven into every subject, with real life-application lessons. The classes are informative and even entertaining, so my two 4th graders pay attention and learn. When I have to work, we load DVD's and workbooks into backpacks and the kids have a mobile classroom! I can't recommend it highly enough! October 20, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Ease of Use has some areas that seem to fall short of the standard of excellence found in other areas, thus pulling down the Overall Rating. As I started orienting myself to the product before starting the actual lessons I did not pay any attention to the printed Video Guide. When starting the first day of school I noticed the printed materials were on Day 2 as Day 1 had been for orientation. I had difficulty wrapping my thinking patterns around the idea that Day 1, though it is for the parent/teacher and not the student, would be counted as Day 1 of school. At least there was consistency in this as the printed Video Lesson Guide, Lesson Guides and Handouts are labeled in the same manner except as described below. There is inconsistency in the DVD Lesson Numbers and the the Bible Worktext Lesson Numbers. Lesson number information provided on the DVD, the printed Video Lesson Guide, the printed Lesson Guides and Handouts are consistently described day/lesson numbers. In the Worktext the lesson information for the student is provided as Unit/Part/Lesson, and this description does not match the printed descriptions. I might add the the lesson number in the Worktext is as a section of the part. The actual number assigned for the lesson in the Worktext does not appear in any printed material. There is good comprehensive printed material covering grading student progress. It may be of good value to include DVD instructions for parents concerning the system of grading student progress during the parent/teacher orientation as a supplement to the printed material. Rated 5 out of 5 by BJU offers a fun, Christian curriculum you probably never had We ordered Grade 4 DVD with books for our son and have been pleased with this Christian curriculum. We have noticed that BJU strives to make the education experience an enjoyable one. For instance, in Handwriting, there is an interview with a man from Hawaii that shares interesting information about the Hawaiian language. Also, Spelling introduces hink pinks to 4th graders which are fun, one syllable rhymes. One of the best activities in Science so far is one that uses tools to simulate bird beaks. And in Reading, there is a Western theme with a humorous character, Cliff, that, in one situation, inadvertently helps students understand the word, "irrelevant." It's been a joy to see our son laugh while he's learning. September 11, 2015
