Mrs. Sarah Lawson, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Lawson has five years' experience teaching in the classroom and over ten years at BJU Distance Learning. "One of my goals in teaching is to help your child feel successful at his present level and to encourage him to improve. I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, and I’m thankful to the Lord for letting me teach your child through this Distance Learning program."

Mrs. Sherri Vick, BS

Mrs. Sherri Vick, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningSherri Vick previously taught various elementary and junior high grades. "I like to look at the picture as a whole—to relate one subject to another so that the child can see how God’s plan fits together. I want the child to want to learn, so the lessons have to be fun. Hands-on is the best way, so I don’t want the student to just watch, but participate too! One of my goals is that, after watching the lessons, your child will continue in the things he has learned and develop lifelong learning skills that he can use both now and in the future."

Mrs. Debra Overly, BS, MS

Mrs. Debra Overly, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Overly, a mother of three, has experience teaching several elementary grades. "I want to encourage each child to look forward to learning each day and also to provide sufficient practice and review activities to help alleviate mom’s workload. Most importantly, I want to present Christ in each subject that I teach. Each child should hear the gospel and then see in a very practical way how it can change a sinner."

Miss Tara Liston, BA, MAT

Mrs. Tara Liston, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMiss Liston has experience working with children from primary to high school. “Teaching is a joy. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to impact children’s lives with the hope of encouraging a growing relationship with the Lord. I love teaching, and I hope my enthusiasm will give your child a love for learning.”

Mrs. Evanna Walker, BS

Mrs. Evanna Walker, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Walker has eight years’ experience teaching first grade at Bob Jones Elementary School. “My first love is to teach a child to read-primarily so that he can read God’s Word for himself and share it with others. He should be able to appreciate what he reads, draw conclusions, and make value judgments to become a thinker.”

Grade 4 DVD with Books is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Materials/Wonderful Biblical Integration This is a great curriculum choice if you are looking for something that the student can do on their own. I have found that my son does get a bit bored at times and has quite a long day of video plus worktext pages. We really enjoy all of the classes. The Handwriting is a bit of busy work since he can write in cursive already. The Math is excellent but the worktext pages are too much for most days. It's great if your student needs a lot of review! The teachers are great, but a few of the videos need updated and some of the teachers are not as interactive as others. I wish the complete package was a bit cheaper or at least up-to-date videos with the price. You might need to change a few things to make for a shorter school day. I don't think you will be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the bible program! By the end of the year my son will be a more advanced reader because of the richness the cirriculum has provided.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved the product but wasn't happy with some of the changes I have used BJU with my eldest daughter for the last 3 years of her homeschooling. We loved it. It was easy to use and she was very independent with it. I now use it for 4 more of my children. The grade 4 they enjoy very much and are learning to be independent. My only complaint is this year I have loose leaf copies of the teachers editions instead of hard copies. It was so much easier to have the actual book which is identical the the students book. There is no searching for pages and overload of paper work to search through. I hope next year they provide the books like in the past.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Saver and Faith Grower! I absolutely love BJU 4th grade DVD/Distance Learning! We really struggled with whether or not we could afford the program initially... but after having prayed and made the decision, and now experienced it for the past two months, I don't know how we could have afforded NOT to. The Bible is woven into every subject, with real life-application lessons. The classes are informative and even entertaining, so my two 4th graders pay attention and learn. When I have to work, we load DVD's and workbooks into backpacks and the kids have a mobile classroom! I can't recommend it highly enough!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ease of Use has some areas that seem to fall short of the standard of excellence found in other areas, thus pulling down the Overall Rating. As I started orienting myself to the product before starting the actual lessons I did not pay any attention to the printed Video Guide. When starting the first day of school I noticed the printed materials were on Day 2 as Day 1 had been for orientation. I had difficulty wrapping my thinking patterns around the idea that Day 1, though it is for the parent/teacher and not the student, would be counted as Day 1 of school. At least there was consistency in this as the printed Video Lesson Guide, Lesson Guides and Handouts are labeled in the same manner except as described below. There is inconsistency in the DVD Lesson Numbers and the the Bible Worktext Lesson Numbers. Lesson number information provided on the DVD, the printed Video Lesson Guide, the printed Lesson Guides and Handouts are consistently described day/lesson numbers. In the Worktext the lesson information for the student is provided as Unit/Part/Lesson, and this description does not match the printed descriptions. I might add the the lesson number in the Worktext is as a section of the part. The actual number assigned for the lesson in the Worktext does not appear in any printed material. There is good comprehensive printed material covering grading student progress. It may be of good value to include DVD instructions for parents concerning the system of grading student progress during the parent/teacher orientation as a supplement to the printed material.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BJU offers a fun, Christian curriculum you probably never had We ordered Grade 4 DVD with books for our son and have been pleased with this Christian curriculum. We have noticed that BJU strives to make the education experience an enjoyable one. For instance, in Handwriting, there is an interview with a man from Hawaii that shares interesting information about the Hawaiian language. Also, Spelling introduces hink pinks to 4th graders which are fun, one syllable rhymes. One of the best activities in Science so far is one that uses tools to simulate bird beaks. And in Reading, there is a Western theme with a humorous character, Cliff, that, in one situation, inadvertently helps students understand the word, "irrelevant." It's been a joy to see our son laugh while he's learning.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the best I am not sure about the DVD's. I like the idea of having a teacher for my son to listen to, especially since I am teaching more than one child. I however like the more one on one when I teach him. I think he is bored with the video at times. He also takes twice as long to do work, and the video's are not that long. But it's stop and go sometimes as the teacher will say pause the video and do this and then come back. I think the price is a lot for them to be so old, and also, the fact that we have to change DVD players 2-3 times per day because certain dvd's won't work in certain players. The dvd's also skip a lot. I am not sure we would order them again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from teachers edition books I really enjoy using BJU teaching material. The only thing I REALLY miss is all the teachers edition books for all the subjects. One cannot read the tiny print in the new paper parents copy. when teachers edition is listed in catalog and I pay for it , I should receive it. God Bless Lisa

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Our 6th BJU Year We're in our 6th year of using BJU press DVD homeschool program. We were sold on the curriculum when we watched how much fun my nephew was having with the highschool DVD program. Incidentally he'll be graduating from college this school year which he has paid for with scholarships for academic excellence. We have enjoyed using the BJU curriculum. It is very thorough and complete. It is not cheap but I know it would cost just this much or more to put together a comparable program of courses on my own. The teachers are all excellent and we have our favorites. My daughter has learned a lot and frankly so have I. Don't think this is a plug it in and leave it program. To get the most out of it get involved and follow along. I really like the addition of excel grading sheets. Yaay! Made my day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Need more time to assess. I've used BJU curriculum in the past & I really like it. This is the first year I've used the DVD distance learning. We are only about three weeks into school so more time is needed to properly assess, but my initial thoughts are that this is a lot of work. I got the DVDs so that I wouldn't have to spend so much time teaching, but just trying to get organized & finding what I need for correcting & instructing is monumental. I'm not much impressed at this point. I would much rather have preferred to have the teacher's manuals...much quicker & better organized. If I could afford it I would get the Teacher's Editions for all the subjects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Curriculum I am enjoying this year's set-up of the 4rth Grade curriculum. Instead of the CD for parents to print out, everything is already prepared and I can just place it in the binder. I can prepare my son's school work with ease. My only suggestion is that the font letters for parents guide needs to be more clearer in photocopy and a little bigger. It is hard for me to read. The Social/History Studies, some topics may not go along with the California Standards but my son loves it and we just supplement it with what we do not have. Otherwise, wonderful curriculum! Keep placing emphasis on God and the Bible in all the classes. We appreciate that. My son loves his teachers. Thanks BJU!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Grade 4 with Books Grade 4 DVD with books is a good program. The good: Bible and English are very good, student can work independently. I really like how English alternates Grammar and Writing. Science and Math are good. I do wish the teacher assigned the entire work text in Math instead of moving to the fact reviews and extra reviews. I have my student do the work text first and then, only if needed, do the extra reviews. Reading is good, but is a lot of work. We do not do all assigned pages on this. I do like the book links a lot. The bad: History--you only get the student notebook b/c this is the older edition. The notebook does not contain any study pages. Due to this, studying for tests is quite difficult and very involved. We have moved to open book tests in History b.c of this. Spelling is the older edition. I like the newer edition that is not DVD better. We do use the older edition, but skip the journal part. I hope they update the DVD's to meet the current/latest edition in the texts. I would recommend BJU DVD overall. I think it is a sold Biblical program.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall a good product My son is using this product and he likes it. However, it is very frustrating to him (and me) that the lesson stops in the middle of a lesson and you have to go back out to the main menu and select the next section to finish the lesson. It's not very easy to get back to the main menu and find the right lesson. He does like all the neat characters in the videos, it makes it more interesting to him.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE BJU This was our 4th year with BJU. LOVE BJU Distance Learning!! However, the printed Teacher's Edition being replaced with a CD was a HUGE disappointment! I can't imagine a single parent wanting to insert/remove a CD every time you want to utilize the Teacher's materials. Ended up ordering the printed edition, which was an extra expense. Not sure why the price of the DVD distance learning did not decrease when the printed Teacher's Edition was eliminated. To my knowledge, the DVDs and student materials were not new this year. As for the teacher's...they are great! Our daughter can hardly wait to start 5th grade after seeing some of her favorite teachers on the 5th grade list.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would recommend DVD's however lack of printed materials needed are a major downfall to this curriculum. I have homeschooled for 13 years. This is my first year to use BJU Press DVD's. I have never used any type of DVD program before. After speaking with several homeschooling moms I chose BJU over Abeka. I love the teachers and the content of the videos. However, the biggest complaint I have is with the printed material. I would have rather paid extra upfront and received all the printed material I needed rather than continuously print out extra materials. I wish someone from BJU press would have explained to me about this treacherous task that was before me. I do not have a multi purpose copier or printer, just the basic deskjet type, which is very costly to print large amounts on. After reading more reviews on this product I realized that this has been an issue for a while. I would recommend BJU Videos to other parents, but I would definitely warn them about the difficulty of finding out what is necessary to print and then printing or ordering those items. Most homeschooling parents have multiple children and trying to determine what has been needed to print or order has consumed an enormous amount of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our family loves the curriculum! We're really impressed so far with the 4th grade curriculum! Trying to economize, we started out with dvds only, then sent it all back and ordered the dvds with books after seeing how integral the books are to the lessons. BJU isn't cheap, and that was prohibitive to us at first. For different reasons, most pointedly because the dvds have such a dated feel to them (10+ years old), we strongly feel that BJU Press should be SELLING the dvds for the prices they charge, not leasing them. However, for our family at this time, the high price has been worth it. Our daughter, who has always been homeschooled had been asking for the last year to try public school. We prayed and prayed about a solution, and after just a week of the BJU Press dvd series, she came to me and said, "I like this kind of school so much that I don't want to go to public school anymore." For us, THAT was worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love the DVDs! I was reluctant to use DVDs, having always used just the textbooks and since we don't have much spare cash. A friend urged me to try it, so this year was our first attempt. My boys absolutely love them! They find the teachers very interesting, learn more than they were learning before, and don't spend any extra time on school than in the past. I only wish I could keep them long enough for my daughter to use as well, rather than having to order them again. I also wish I had ordered the whole package, curriculum included, as that would have been almost the same price as I spent on used books plus new DVDs. We chose DVDs so we could take them in the car with us. I also wish I had been using the Bible curriculum all along. This was the first year we tried the Bible, and I absolutely love it! It has such thought-provoking questions and has triggered many profitable discussions with my children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Math 4 I am very pleased with the Math 4 dvd! My son was struggling in Math and after using the dvd for only three months, he has shown great improvement. He needed to see some success. His confidence level was very low and now he is so proud ofhim self. The teacher does an excellent job of explaining with visual learning as well. The reviews are good and she makes it so much fun. I would highly recommend the product and look forward to using the Math 5 dvd.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product! After trying multiple writing curricula, I decided to try bjupress English, and I'm so glad I did. It's the answer to my prayer, and I couldn't be more pleased. My 4th and 6th graders have learned a tremendous amount of grammar and have quickly grasped and embraced the writing process thanks to Mrs. Overly's engaging, thorough and effective teaching. I love how the grammar lessons are directly applied in the writing lessons that follow them. This method clearly demonstrates why grammar is so important and how the two (grammar and writing) go together. I will never teach grammar and writing separately again! Mrs. Overly is such a kind, godly woman. She's extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I am so impressed with her expertise. Also, unlike myself, since she is a teacher on DVD, she is always perfectly prepared and never moody! ;-) I love the flexibility of DVD's because we can watch the lessons anywhere in the house on any t.v. or computer. I think it's wonderful that the DVD teacher teaches directly to the homeschool student as opposed to teaching a classroom full of children with a video camera set up in the back of the room as some curriculum providers do it. The bjupress teacher is able to focus all of her instruction on the homeschool student, and no time is wasted. We have really enjoyed the themes, game shows and the "virtual field trips' as we call them. This adds some fun to the mix. The video lessons are 15 minutes in length, so it takes us approximately 30 -45 minutes to complete a lesson. In the 4th grade course, completing a lesson usually takes 30 minutes. In the 6th grade course, it usually takes a little longer, more like 30 - 45 minutes. There was a time when I wondered if my children were being adequately prepared for high school and ultimately college, but now I feel confident that they are receiving the best education possible. I would highly recommend the English DVD with Books Distance Learning Kit. It's definitely worth every penny...and then some!
