Prairie Anna, historical fiction for young readers by Peggy House, tells the story of Anna, the middle daughter in a family of Russian immigrants. Most of Anna’s life is decided for her—what to study, which chores to do, when to eat and sleep. Everyone in her family works hard to survive the bitter winters and blazing summers of the prairie. Rated 5 out of 5 by Authentic History Germans from Russia came to the US in large numbers from the 1870's through the early 1900's. Yet, what happened then has not been see through the eyes of a child until now. Ten-year-old Anna walks through tragedy and struggles during the blazing summers and bitter winters of South Dakota in the 1920's. Her story does not shy away from the harsh realities of life, and allows the reader to see how one immigrant child coped with limited choices. The historical significance of this pioneer experience comes alive for young readers in the pages of Prairie Anna. April 21, 2014
