We were searching for a supplement option as an approach to spelling. This is not a subject we normally would do routinely, rather approach spelling as needed. However, this year we felt like we needed a basic supplement that would help build vocabulary while also teaching spelling rules and memorization and not be intensive.
This was perfect! I LOVE the list-a-week approach. While the lists can certainly stretch longer or shorter if needed, this repetition, but very quick lessons, is exactly what I was looking for. It is colorfully illustrated which my daughter enjoys and I love the practice sheets for each list that are included. Many off-brand workbooks have little practice, or they jump all over the place - and this has a logical layout. A few of the 1-page practice activities felt a little confusing, but we only have the workbook - we don't use any of the instruction books, and a few seconds thinking about it we were able to grasp what the book wanted.
While we are Christian, I also enjoy that every word in the book isn't out of the Bible. It takes a real-life approach while using teachable moments to integrate Biblical education. I think that is a realistic approach to learning to live in God's eyes. Children do hundreds of things each day that are from God, but aren't reading scripture - and I think that's important.
A digital version would be a great addition.

We have used BJU spelling 1, 2, and 3. I like everything about it. My daughter loves the colorful workbooks, the program talks about the importance of learning to spell, it incorporates bible, the teacher book is easy to use, and the CD with the book has printable worksheets to reinforce the spelling lists. I use everything that this spelling program offers.
My favorite part...my daughter loves it:)

Rated 5 out of 5Â by MyThreeSons Excellent Spelling program
We love this edition of the spelling program which we've used with two of our children. The pages are colorful and attractive but not cluttered. The spaces for for answers are just right for a third grader and the types of activities that vary from week to week are enjoyable. The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars on ease of use is because if you tear out the perforated pages, the new week's list is on the back of the previous week's work which means you need to remember to keep that page so that you have your spelling list and first day's activity.

Rated 2 out of 5Â by Neil Secularized version of the first edition!
Almost all biblical references removed from this 2nd edition Spelling work text. That's right, REMOVED. Although my children like this new 2nd edition because it's half as challenging as the previous edition (they also would like chocolate candy bars for dinner, that does not mean we give it to them!) We chose the older 1st edition because of the biblical references and christian teachings all throughout the work text. Now all these have been moved to the teachers text and removed from the children's work text which makes no sense to us. The scripture references are KJV which means they are older English, but our experience is that the children learn this easily, and once mastered they can read any version of the bible as they grow older.

After last year, I decided to go with another provider for spelling. The previous edition was just not "doing it" for my son. However, when I heard there was an updated version, I wanted to give it a try as we love BJU. I am so glad I did! Leaps and bounds better than the last one! Colorful, fun, and the content in organized well on the page.
