K5 for Distance Learning

About the Courses

K5 Distance Learning teaches kindergarteners to apply their natural curiosity and start to develop a broad base of interests and gives them the basic tools they need to explore the world around them. Bible stories taught by Mrs. White spark an early interest in God's Word. In K5 Beginnings, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Lawson teach listening, oral composition, phonics, and reading comprehension while integrating art, science, and heritage studies concepts. K5 Math with Mrs. Franklin focuses on teaching number sense and uses manipulatives to explain basic math functions such as numbers, measurement, time, and money.

Bible Truths K5

Lessons emphasize the importance of God's Word and Creation and chronologically focus on Bible people ranging from Abraham to the apostle Paul, including the life of Christ.

Scheduling Information: 180 days; lessons are 15 minutes in length.

Beginnings K5

The Beginnings program provides thorough instruction for teaching phonics and reading skills. It follows an integrated approach that includes skills for listening and responding with oral and written composition. Complete Science and Heritage Studies units are woven into the themes. Scheduling Information: 180 days; lessons are 60 minutes in length.

Math K5

Manipulatives are used to develop a solid foundation of math concepts, such as number sense, time, money, fractions, addition, subtraction, and geometry.

Scheduling Information: 180 days; lessons are 30 minutes in length.

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, BS

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Lawson previously taught kindergarten for four years. "One of my goals in teaching is to help your child feel successful at his present level and to encourage him to improve. Throughout the lessons, we talk about simple yet extremely important concepts, such as ‘God made me special,’ and ‘God gave me the Bible.’ I enjoy talking about these things with the children through the lessons. I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, and I’m thankful to the Lord for letting me teach your child through this Distance Learning program."

Mrs. Evanna Walker, BS

Mrs. Evanna Walker, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Walker has eight years’ experience teaching first grade at Bob Jones Elementary School. “My first love is to teach a child to read-primarily so that he can read God’s Word for himself and share it with others. He should be able to appreciate what he reads, draw conclusions, and make value judgments to become a thinker.”

Rated 4 out of 5 by Confusing to start the program I will admit my background is in business and this is my first time to try homeschooling. I ordered the online program with all the textbooks. I was disappointed when I opened the box and then had no instructions about how to start. I feel like the last two weeks I have spent many hours stumbling around figuring things out. A master guide that says: create login, watch orientation video, mom's minutes, cut out characters, pop out manipulatives. . .etc would have been a huge help. My other recommendation would be to have a master list that says what you will need for the year: 3 ring folders, crayons, glue, zip lock bags, popsicle sticks. . . Instead of having to go through each subject and coming up with a list. Or better still charge an optional extra fee and include all necessary materials. I was impressed with the videos. They pack bible truths in with all the subjects. My daughter loves watching them. Every day she is excited to start her new video. I know she will learn a lot this year; I just wish they made it a litter easier for parents who are new to the program. July 5, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent experience We are on week four and we are absolutely loving this program. it is thorough, fun and teaches the kids in a manner that is easy to understand, but doesn't bore them either. We are having a great time! I recommend it to all my friends! September 16, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by It works! My son learned so much with the daily 1 hour k-4 last year! This year we are on lesson 15 in K-5. The transition period only lasted a few lessons as K-5 is about 1 1/2 hours. A few lessons into K-5, my son asked if he could watch K-4 instead. So I knew K-5 was more challenging. I let him watch K-4 those few days he asked as we still had 30 unwatched lessons and 3 months till K-4 online ended. Then to better help with the transition, I let him watch Beginnings one day and the Bible and Math the next day. That helped a lot. He will work his way up to the 3 daily videos. I love this program! Rated 4 out of 5 by Fun and Engaging This is our first year using BJU DLO, and so far it is going well. My kindergartener is thrilled when it is school time. Loves to watch the videos, sing, dance, and learn all at the same time. My only frustration is the amount of prep work that is required of me the parent along with all the extra supplies that I need to have for course work. It is great and fun, but too much work for a busy parent of multiple other children. September 25, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by We love BJU! BJU is a solid and biblically integrated curriculum that equips my child to achieve academic goals but also grow spiritually. I am a working single mom who cringed at the idea of public schooling. DLO through BJU enabled me to make homeschooling work for us. My only regret (as a working mom with 3 kids, 2 currently doing this program) is having so many things I need to print. I'd enjoy an option to pay a bit more for preprinted lesson handouts. Otherwise, I LOVE this curriculum! August 2, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Overall Very Pleased We are about a month away from finishing K5, & we have been very impressed overall. Daughter is already reading books classified at 1st & 2nd grade levels. I do find the organization of the class schedules & materials sometimes cumbersome. Each class has its own calendar/prep list to follow in print and online, which is nice, but sometimes I wish I had a way online to group the lessons together by day & prep with an all-subjects-at-once view. Also, there are a lot of extra sheets to download and print; I'm not sure why so many of the extras are included in the backs of the books and yet so many are left up to the parent to print. I wish they could all be in the books ready to go. We opt not to do many of the crafts, but I'm glad they are included for the times when we do choose to do them. Daughter seems to love the videos overall, and the worktext pages do go along well with the lesson materials and seem to do a good job of reinforcing the concepts. We plan to use the same system for 1st grade and see how things go with a little heavier course load this coming year. March 25, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good fundamental teaching. I have yet to actually use product since my daughter won't start until this fall. I have went through all the books and supplies and am very excited to start this curriculum with her. My nephew is finishing it this year and from what I have seen the teachers are great and the papers go right along with the lesson. In every subject you get a great Bibical foundation. Would recommend to anyone looking to home school. February 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good The lessons are to slow. I find my self fast forwarding it a lot. The verse should be repeated 3x instead of just 2. Having a supply box for each subject is not needed. The exercise portion is also not needed. every thing should be edited down and kept short leaving time for extra curricular activitives. We need to homeschool for four hours which includes cooking art physical Ed music field trips. I just feel like it is feeling more like school we are so busy just doing the videos we run out of Time for some of the more creative activities of homeschooling. Otherwise great. I don't know if we will do it for again for first grade. I am considering the unschooled approach to homeschooling. Thanks February 15, 2013
