Heritage Studies 1 and Science 1 Online with Books Homeschool Curriculum Online Video Course

Questions & Answers

Family and Community and Science 1 are available together as a two-for-one special. These combined courses include two single-semester courses covering social studies and science.

Family and Community teaches children about family, communities, jobs, land, and the United States. Each topic will be presented within the framework of God’s redemptive plan. Mrs. Lawson focuses on the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in the social studies.

Science 1 introduces children to basic science process skills and topics including plants, animals, the human body, earth, space, light, and sound. Mrs. Overly wants her students to develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for God’s creation so they can begin to understand foundational science facts and skills from a biblical worldview.

What should 1st-grade students expect in Heritage Studies 1 and Science 1?

In Heritage Studies 1, every lesson will include a lively introduction to the lesson, followed by reading with Mrs. Lawson, and teaching segments that make learning fun. Mrs. Lawson will encourage children to follow along in their textbooks, but they do not need to be able to read or be confident readers to begin this course, as she will often read aloud for the lesson.

In Science 1, lessons will include reading directed by Mrs. Overly, followed by discussion time with questions and investigations, explorations, and STEM activities for hands-on learning. Lessons will also include activity pages for understanding and review.

Reading assignments ahead of time is not required for either course. Both Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Overly will be reading the lessons aloud in the video.

What will students need to do after the lesson?

Children should complete assigned student activity pages after the lesson is over. Science lessons may include an investigation, exploration, or STEM activity to be completed after the lesson.

For retention, it may be helpful for a parent to read lessons aloud to struggling readers after the lesson is over.
