Family and Community and Science 1 are available together as a two-for-one special. These combined courses include two single-semester courses covering social studies and science.
Family and Community teaches children about family, communities, jobs, land, and the United States. Each topic will be presented within the framework of God’s redemptive plan. Mrs. Lawson focuses on the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in the social studies.
Science 1 introduces children to basic science process skills and topics including plants, animals, the human body, earth, space, light, and sound. Mrs. Overly wants her students to develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for God’s creation so they can begin to understand foundational science facts and skills from a biblical worldview.
In Heritage Studies 1, every lesson will include a lively introduction to the lesson, followed by reading with Mrs. Lawson, and teaching segments that make learning fun. Mrs. Lawson will encourage children to follow along in their textbooks, but they do not need to be able to read or be confident readers to begin this course, as she will often read aloud for the lesson.
In Science 1, lessons will include reading directed by Mrs. Overly, followed by discussion time with questions and investigations, explorations, and STEM activities for hands-on learning. Lessons will also include activity pages for understanding and review.
A special-segment series in which characters from the textbook participate in scenarios that illustrate topics.
A special-segment series that introduces famous people.
A special-segment series with Lewis the lion that gives background information, videos, and pictures to help children explore different topics.
A special-segment series with a student scientist who discusses STEM careers, famous scientists, and science concepts.
A special-segment series giving students review time with our toucan friend, Mr. Beaks.
For both courses, children should have their student editions and student activities pages ready for the lesson. Children should be prepared to follow along in their books for reading-skill development, but they do not need to be able to read.
Reading assignments ahead of time is not required for either course. Both Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Overly will be reading the lessons aloud in the video.
Children should complete assigned student activity pages after the lesson is over. Science lessons may include an investigation, exploration, or STEM activity to be completed after the lesson.
For retention, it may be helpful for a parent to read lessons aloud to struggling readers after the lesson is over.

Mrs. Lawson has five years' experience teaching in the classroom and over ten years at BJU Press. "One of my goals in teaching is to help your child feel successful at his present level and to encourage him to improve. I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, and I’m thankful to the Lord for letting me teach your child through this program."
Mrs. Overly, a mother of three, has experience teaching several elementary grades. "I want to encourage each child to look forward to learning each day and also to provide sufficient practice and review activities to help alleviate mom’s workload. Most importantly, I want to present Christ in each subject that I teach. Each child should hear the gospel and then see in a very practical way how it can change a sinner."
