K5 for Distance Learning

About the Courses

K5 Distance Learning teaches kindergarteners to apply their natural curiosity and start to develop a broad base of interests and gives them the basic tools they need to explore the world around them. Bible stories taught by Mrs. White spark an early interest in God’s Word. In K5 Beginnings, Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Lawson teach listening, oral composition, phonics, and reading comprehension while integrating art, science, and heritage studies concepts. K5 Math with Mrs. Franklin focuses on teaching number sense and uses manipulatives to explain basic math functions such as numbers, measurement, time, and money.

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, BS

Mrs. Sarah Lawson, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Lawson previously taught kindergarten for four years. "One of my goals in teaching is to help your child feel successful at his present level and to encourage him to improve. Throughout the lessons, we talk about simple yet extremely important concepts, such as ‘God made me special,’ and ‘God gave me the Bible.’ I enjoy talking about these things with the children through the lessons. I wanted to be a teacher from the time I was a little girl, and I’m thankful to the Lord for letting me teach your child through this Distance Learning program."

Mrs. Evanna Walker, BS

Mrs. Evanna Walker, a course instructor for BJU Press Distance LearningMrs. Walker has eight years’ experience teaching first grade at Bob Jones Elementary School. “My first love is to teach a child to read-primarily so that he can read God’s Word for himself and share it with others. He should be able to appreciate what he reads, draw conclusions, and make value judgments to become a thinker.”

Rated 4 out of 5 by I used this to keep my grand daughter caught up during the summer. It was a great way to stay on track. Great way to keep kids on track with their skills during the summer August 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by YAY! I wanted something that my children can do independently while i'm pregnant(I need more rest during this part of my life). I wanted it to be beneficial for them(not just watching tv). This book, that a friend from church told me about, was such a blessing. The kids really enjoy them and like marking off their progress each day and week. :) I'm VERY pleased with this book! :) June 27, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by It works! My son learned so much with the daily 1 hour k-4 last year! This year we are on lesson 15 in K-5. The transition period only lasted a few lessons as K-5 is about 1 1/2 hours. A few lessons into K-5, my son asked if he could watch K-4 instead. So I knew K-5 was more challenging. I let him watch K-4 those few days he asked as we still had 30 unwatched lessons and 3 months till K-4 online ended. Then to better help with the transition, I let him watch Beginnings one day and the Bible and Math the next day. That helped a lot. He will work his way up to the 3 daily videos. I love this program! Rated 4 out of 5 by This is a great way to keep the material fresh in their minds! I am using Vacation Stations with my soon to be first grader this summer. While she drags her feet to do it, she usually ends up doing well at it. It has a good balance between keeping her sharp on things shes learned in K-5, but not being so hard that she gives up. I did notice that she stumbles when they use different letter type than the pre-cursive letters that she learned to write her letters in. I am there to help her, though, and I realize that library books will also have different fonts. I also find that she has a hard time when they make the letters or numbers smaller (about 1/3 the size) than what she is supposed to write on the line. She really relies on those handwriting guidelines to help her form her numbers and letters. My other daughter would not have found this hard at all, but for some children, it may cause them some confusion. That said, I love that BJU makes these books available for students on all the same material (math concepts, grammer concepts, etc) that they previously learned. Its amazing how quickly they can forget, so this enables them to review during the summer and hit the ground running in the fall. I will continue to use these books with both my girls (rising first grader and rising fifth grader). July 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Keeping things simple The Education Director from my daughter's school recommended this tool for summer engagement. I am pleased with the simpliciity and ease of use for both of us. She will work on her two pages each day and color the reading opportunities. I review her work at the end of the day and discuss what she thought was easy or difficult. I enjoy the conversation that can come about using this tool and knowing that she is keeping a steady check on subject matter she already has a grasp on will hopefully keep her prepared for walking into the door of her 1st grade classroom this fall. Rated 4 out of 5 by Fun and Engaging This is our first year using BJU DLO, and so far it is going well. My kindergartener is thrilled when it is school time. Loves to watch the videos, sing, dance, and learn all at the same time. My only frustration is the amount of prep work that is required of me the parent along with all the extra supplies that I need to have for course work. It is great and fun, but too much work for a busy parent of multiple other children. September 25, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by We love BJU! BJU is a solid and biblically integrated curriculum that equips my child to achieve academic goals but also grow spiritually. I am a working single mom who cringed at the idea of public schooling. DLO through BJU enabled me to make homeschooling work for us. My only regret (as a working mom with 3 kids, 2 currently doing this program) is having so many things I need to print. I'd enjoy an option to pay a bit more for preprinted lesson handouts. Otherwise, I LOVE this curriculum! August 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love it! We are having fewer parents who want to spend the money or vacation station. For this reason, we offer, if the student does the work through the summer, when they turn in their completed book (at open house night) we give them a $10.00 lunch ticket. We feel it's that important!! June 5, 2013
