Grade 1 Scheduling Information: 180 days of work in Phonics & English, Reading, and Handwriting 1, Math 1, and Spelling 1, and 90 days of work in Heritage Studies 1 and Science 1. Average daily video time: 2 hours 15 minutes.

In grade 1, your child will strengthen his or her phonics and reading comprehension skills, learn about early American history, start building a foundation of science knowledge, add, subtract, study spelling patterns, improve handwriting, and more. The BJU Press educational materials aims to teach for understanding and to develop your child’s critical thinking skills with high-interest materials that also encourage a love of learning.

Take-Along Stories 2 provides additional reading material for supplemental reading between first and second grade. The carrying bag contains ten stories designed to help review and strengthen reading skills.

Take-Along Stories 1 provides reading material for supplemental summer reading between first and second grade. The bag contains sixteen appealing stories written to develop a new reader’s confidence and fluency with independent reading.

Math 1 uses manipulatives and real-life experiences to teach place value, addition, subtraction, geometry, time, money, measurements, and fractions–all with engaging themes and characters. Writing equations, reading graphs, and other concepts are introduced as part of problem-solving skills.

Family and Community and Science 1 are available together as a two-for-one special. These combined courses include two single-semester courses covering social studies and science. Family and Community teaches children about family, communities, jobs, land, and the United States.

Introduce children to early social studies skills with Mrs. Lawson, the Heritage Kids, and a variety of games and engaging activities. This course is a 90-day (one-semester) course and is intended to be combined with Science 1.

Introduce children to early science skills and prepare them to learn about the world around them. This course is a 90-day (one-semester) course and is intended to be combined with Heritage Studies 1. A combined Heritage Studies 1 and Science 1 course option is available with a two-for-one special.

A Father’s Care introduces Bible truths through familiar Bible characters who are presented chronologically in a study of the Old and New Testaments. Dramatic segments, application stories that reveal God’s character, various hands-on activities, and visuals reinforce the child’s learning experience.
