Skill Assessments

Skill Assessments are not exact measures of a student’s ability or potential—they are simply tools to help guide instruction. These assessments help provide a snapshot of where a student/child is currently performing and offer helpful insight for grouping or targeting support, but they should be used alongside parent/teacher observation.

BJU Press has created math skills assessments to represent math skills instructed in BJU Press math products. These assessments are especially helpful if your student is transitioning from a different curriculum or if grades indicate gaps in learning.

The Standardized Math Test Guide helps you understand your child’s standardized math test results and how those scores relate to grade-level expectations. It is designed to give you confidence that your child is placed in the appropriate math level, explain test results in clear, practical terms, and provide a big-picture view of your child’s progress. These results are best used alongside skills assessments to support informed decisions about instruction and pacing.

BJU Press has created informal reading skills assessments to determine a student's reading ability. These tests involve oral and silent reading evaluations, including miscues and comprehension questions. These reading assessments  can be used in combination with the Phonics Progress Monitoring Tool and an outside norm-referenced test called the DIBELS.

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a widely used assessment for students in grades K–6 that helps identify reading difficulties, monitor progress, guide instruction, and predict future reading success. It evaluates key areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. While BJU Press is not affiliated with DIBELS, it is a widely respected, research-based assessment that can provide valuable insight into early reading development.

The Phonics Progress Monitoring Tool (PPMT) helps guide instruction and track early reading development by focusing on foundational decoding skills. It assesses a student’s ability to identify letter–sound relationships and read syllables, ensuring they are applying phonics rules rather than relying on memorization. The results help identify gaps in understanding and inform next steps for instruction.

The Reading Standardized Test Guide helps you understand your child’s standardized test reading results and how those scores relate to grade-level expectations. It is designed to give you confidence that your child is placed in the right grade, explain test results in clear, practical terms, and provide a big-picture view of your child’s progress. These results are best used alongside skills assessments, the phonics progress monitoring tool, and DIBELS to support informed decisions about instruction and pacing.
